In April 1985, it would have been impossible to envision the diverse company that UTRS has become. Forty years ago, no one would have imagined that UTRS would one day be able to deliver such varied capabilities as:
- Providing advanced engineering and prototyping solutions for the U.S. military and industry
- Operating state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities, producing everything from quantity precision components to large-scale assemblies
- Offering cutting-edge cybersecurity consulting and managed services to both government and commercial clients
- Developing and implementing advanced safety management systems for aviation, transit, and other high-risk industries
- Delivering comprehensive civil and environmental engineering services to municipalities, utilities, and private developers
- Supporting research and development in strategic and rare earth metals, including pioneering new titanium extraction processes
- Consulting on infrastructure protection, including corrosion control and cathodic protection for critical assets
This extraordinary variety is a testament to UTRS’s relentless drive to innovate and expand. We bring all these capabilities together under one roof to solve complex, multidisciplinary challenges with consistent dedication. No matter the division or specialty, one thing unites us: our unwavering commitment to our clients, our people, and our agreements. That’s what “Always, got your back” means. It’s not a slogan. It’s a promise.
Our breadth means our clients can benefit from multiple UTRS capabilities to leverage integrated, multi-disciplinary solutions to their complex challenges. For example, a commercial airport might work with Fuzion Safety to implement data-driven risk mitigation systems, while also turning to our Civil and Environmental Engineering division to manage a stormwater runoff issue, and relying on UTRS InfoSec to protect their growing cybersecurity infrastructure. A municipal government seeking to modernize its public services might leverage our Civil and Environmental Engineering team to design a new water treatment facility while our Manufacturing division fabricates the custom large-scale component the facility needs and our InfoSec experts secure the facility’s digital control systems against cyber threats. A state transit agency could benefit from our environmental engineering planning, bridge cathodic protection, and transit safety data analysis – all under one roof. Having a single, dedicated partner to cohesively tackle these challenges saves clients time, resources, and headaches. This consolidation streamlines communication, ensures consistency, enhances efficiency, lowers risk, and fosters a deeper understanding of the client’s overall mission.
While appreciating the technical sophistication of our services and the sheer span of our knowledge base, we also recognize that people have always been UTRS’s greatest strength. This includes the remarkable employees – past and present – who have built and sustained our culture of excellence. It also includes our clients, who have been symbiotic partners in our success and theirs. We’ve grown together, solved problems together, and created lasting impact together. We offer a sincere and heartfelt thank you to all of you: we wouldn’t be here without you.
While finishing this retrospective, we look forward to the future with great optimism. This optimism isn’t based on wishful thinking but on the solid foundation of values, hard work, and dedication demonstrated by our team every day. The technical landscape will continue to evolve, new challenges will emerge, and UTRS will be ready to meet them with the same creative problem-solving approach that has defined our first four decades.

As we pass our 40th anniversary and conclude this series of posts on the history of UTRS, it’s clear this isn’t the end, but rather just the end of the beginning.
