1985-1994: A Foundation for Innovation and Excellence
In the spring of 1985, two computer consultants, Jerry Wright and Lamont McLean, embarked on a journey that would lay the foundation for UTRS. Drawing on their decades of experience at Sun Co. Inc., they launched Universal Technical Resource Services, Inc. (UTRS) with their personal savings and a modest line of credit. Their mission was clear: to provide specialized data processing services to a growing market in need of technical expertise.
UTRS’s commitment to meeting complex challenges resonated with clients. Within just a couple of years, their revenue topped $1 million and their customer list quickly grew to include industry giants such as IBM, Scott Paper, and Boeing Computer Services. This growth was a testament to the founders’ deep industry knowledge and unwavering commitment to excellence.

Wright and McLean’s entrepreneurial spirit and dedication to quality service formed a strong basis for UTRS’s future. Sadly, McLean passed away in 2007, and Wright died in 2023. But the company they founded lives on with an unwavering commitment to innovation, expertise, reliability, and customer satisfaction.
Part 3 will tell the story of UTRS’s 1990s transformation from a small, niche business into a leading technology, engineering, and manufacturing firm providing comprehensive support for government, military, and commercial projects across various industries.
